Military Order of Saint Lazarus has it's roots in a few hospitals run by Knights of St.John, where they treated those unfortunate ones stricken with leprosy. Their patients were knights and commoners alike, and when Christian lands in the Outremer became threatened by their enemies, both patients and caretakers took up arms under the patronage of Saint Lazarus. It was a common practice that diseased knights and nobles from other military orders find refuge within their ranks. These knights are brandishing the green cross on white surcoats, well protected by heavy mail and wielding heavy lances and axes.
